"These days I am not afraid of letting a patient know when they are HIV positive because there are drugs I can prescribe for them"

Françoise Ndayishimiye is a particularly inspiring woman. 13 years ago, even before she discovered her HIV positive status, she joined the fight against AIDS in Burundi, one of the world’s poorest countries. She is now one of over 544,000 currently receiving treatment through Global Fund support. Along the way, she has faced numerous personal battles, and won most of them. She lost her father and some of her close relatives even as she fought to avail free treatment to all people living with AIDS.

Her country has undergone a major civil war which left hundreds of thousands either dead or violated. However, through free treatment, her dear mother’s life was saved when many had lost hope in her continued survival. As a practicing doctor, she is now able to treat many of her patients. Françoise is now president of a large global association of people living with HIV/AIDS, and has been elected as board member of the Global Fund. What does all this mean to her fight, her family, community and country? Listen to her views on the improvements noted in Burundi, and why she thinks it is extremely important to avail free treatment to everyone living with HIV/AIDS in the world.

"I am happy to be represented in the Global Fund Board as a person living with HIV/AIDS. When I vote, my voice is equal to that of the USA; that is something I have hardly seen before! ... We who live with AIDS can also add value. "
