Movie screen for malaria films
My name is Haja Rarivohelison, and I am the Coordinator of Cinémobile, PSI Madagascar.

We have a system of drumming-up support we tell people that there will be a film screening in their village. We go round the village in a car with a PA system. We announce over the microphone that there is going to be a show in the village square, that everyone is welcome and that entrance is free. We tell them they will get a lot out of it – there will be health messages, but also a really entertaining film.

Most of the people live in rural areas and they do not have access to the usual media channels, so seeing a film with Cinémobile is new and they are not used to it. When we arrive in a village, Cinemobile is really the greatest show in town, they are all there in front of the screen – the entire village is there – from the youngest to the oldest – they all come together to watch the entertainment we provide.

We get people to participate in the show. We go into the crowd with the microphone. We ask people if they know about malaria, what the impact of malaria is on their health and whether they are aware there is a treatment. We also ask them about the effect malaria has on their village. If they come across a case of malaria, what should they do first? We have various elements in the show with games and quizzes and we reward those who answer questions with little prizes. Then, we watch the film.

Just after the film, the comedian comes back out and reinforces not just the messages of prevention and treatment, but also what the audience remembers about the film, what messages they have retained and how they feel affected in their village by the problems raised during the film. So it is a way of finding out if people paid attention. But, also, it is a way for us, over and over again, to reinforce the standard messages on prevention and treatment of malaria.

Cinémobile has brought about changes in people’s behavior. Now people feel more interested in the health problem in their villages and in malaria cases. They care more about it, they protect themselves and they know what to do if, for example, their child has malaria. So it is this kind of behavior change that Cinémobile has been able to bring about in villages throughout Madagascar.
