A Place Of Extremes - Fighting TB & HIV In Mongolia
A very high percentage of TB patients registered in the lunch programs complete the full treatment regime. In addition, café owners say they have learned a lot about TB by being involved in the program. Some cafés now provide leaflets to educate their other customers about TB.
The Global Fund also supports a daily lunch and treatment program for TB patients at Ulaanbaatar’s Charity Hospital. In addition, Global Fund grant funding has paid for extensive renovations and equipment in TB wards and labs at the Charity Hospital and in the TB section of the country’s main prison hospital. The Charity Hospital did not previously have a TB ward, and the prison hospital was very run down and poorly equipped.
The reference laboratory at the National Center for Communicable Diseases was also renovated and equipped, and a specially ventilated ward for multidrug-resistant TB was added. Finally, education campaigns about TB are being carried out among particularly vulnerable populations in order to educate them about TB symptoms, diagnosis and treatment.
