Helping the Community to Self-Support

Namibia is a vast country with a thinly spread population. Although HIV and TB treatment is widely available, having to travel long distances makes access to medical staff a real challenge. The national response is to train local people to take care of their community, reducing the number of hospital visits and increasing the recovery rate. Support may come from a family member, from a neighbour who has volunteered to monitor the health of those around them until they are cured, or even from an employer’s health scheme. In all of these cases, with one another’s help, disease can be beaten.
