My name is Safia Mohamed; I am married with one child, who is six. I am a housewife, and my husband is a factory worker. I heard about the Global Fund supported programme when clerks came to my house. They were knocking on every door, noting down the number of children under five in each household. Later we heard an announcement on the radio that insecticide-treated bed nets would be distributed during certain days within different localities. When our day arrived, I took my child to pick up a free insecticide–treated bed net. We did not have to walk very far, because the distribution was being done in a community centre right next to us. I am happy because my child has received a bed net- which she also thinks was a gift.
Q. What changes have you noticed in your family since your child received this bed net?
Before she received this bed net, she would go to the hospital two or three times a year to be treated for Malaria. Since she got it, I have only taken her to the hospital twice: in April 2006 and in February 2007- and not because she had malaria. She only went for general check-ups, whose tests turned out to be negative. She actually had respiratory problems, not malaria. Before this project, we would go looking for medicines at health centers, in vain. We would have to buy them in kiosks. These days the drugs are always available, and besides, they are free. Now I use my money to buy balanced food for the child. I am very happy.
Q. Is there anything else you would like to add?
I would like to advise the whole community to learn about malaria, what its symptoms are, and to find out ways through which they can prevent it. |
